Shelena Gray-Densmore
2025 Recipient

My name is Shelena Gray-Densmore, and I am a graduate student in the Master of Social Work program at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, N.B. I am a Registered Social Worker, and I live with autoimmune arthritis. This condition requires me to navigate chronic pain, fatigue, and unpredictable flare-ups as a mom, foster parent, full-time master’s student, and social worker.

Living with autoimmune arthritis has helped shape my sense of resilience, professional identity, and my ability to empathize with others. My personal and professional experiences, combined with my lived understanding of chronic illness, allow me to approach my work with compassion, humility, and a strong commitment to advocacy. Despite the challenges of living with chronic illness, I am forever grateful for everything I have learned, the barriers I have overcome, and the connections I have made along the way. I feel privileged for the medical care and treatment options available to me that have ultimately made it possible for me to enjoy the wonderful life that I have and the people I get to share it with!

This scholarship from UCBeyond will provide meaningful support as I continue my graduate studies, helping to reduce the physical, financial, and academic barriers associated with managing autoimmune arthritis while pursuing advanced education. By easing these pressures, I can focus more intently on developing specialized clinical skills and advancing my career in providing accessible, survivor-centred mental health care to individuals and families facing adversity.
